About the Conference

Welcome to the registration site of the Second National Deaf People of Color Conference.

The First National Deaf People of Color Conference was held from March 29 to April 1, 2007, in Indianapolis. It was a triumphant success. 155 attendees from across the nation (teachers, professors, instructors, students, interpreters, ITP trainees, social-services personnel, community volunteers, advocates, administrators, parents, students, and leaders) participated in workshops, socialized, networked, and established new friendships. A contingent of students from the Indiana School for the Deaf participated in an all-day Pre-Conference Institute.

This first-of-its-kind conference focused on the concerns and challenges faced by Deaf people of color—African-American, American Indian, Latino/Hispanic, Asian-American, biracial, and multiracial—all of whom have traditionally been under-represented, even invisible, constituencies. There was also an emphasis on attitudes—bias, stereotypes, prejudices, and myths. The Conference was open to people of all colors. Everyone was welcome—and felt welcome too.

At the final Conference session, the Panel/Round Table Discussion, preliminary plans were made for a second DPCC, which is now slated for June 2010 in Portland, Oregon. DPCC-2 follows on the success of the first DPCC, but is a much bigger event. We're expecting approximately 500 to 1,000–or more—attendees from throughout the nation and Canada.

Some features of DPCC-2:

* A one-day Pre-Conference Institute, is slated for Thursday, June 24, with four intensive workshops.

* A one-day Deaf Mac Users' Conference is slated concurrently for Thursday, June 24. This will give attendees a chance to learn about cutting-edge Macintosh technology and how it can enhance our lives and communication options.

* CEUs and CMPs for ASLTA and RID certifications will be offered, enhancing the value of the Conference for those seeking credit for their certifications.

* Workshops and presentations will be scheduled so that all attendees can participate in all of them. You won't have to choose between two valuable presentations; you can attend one and then the other.

* Entertainment will be offered—by Deaf performers of color.

* Registrants will receive an attractive souvenir kit (details under wraps), including personalized badge and passport.
